Sort of. Their initial plan was to get users from conferences. It got them their first users, and spikes when there were other conferences (e.g. political conventions). Conferences alone were not enough, but this got them rolling.

When growth took off in January 2009, it's hard to say precisely how much should be credited to conferences. Some part of it, certainly, since bookings can't take off without hosts, and they'd gotten some hosts.
