There are entire classes of searches for which Google is near worthless; has been SEOd to death

It has often occurred to me that you could use being SEO-proof as the design spec of a good search engine.

Which in turn means that you might be able to launch a new search engine by starting out as a niche search engine for some category that has been blasted by SEO. It must be a valuable category, and your search engine would have to be good to survive.

I don't know how troubled by SEO that market is, but I've often thought it would be good to build a programmable search engine. If you can only have a niche to start with, programmers are a great one.

Another angle: Twitter search is distinct from Google search in that it’s harder to invisibly censor. That’s because Google’s rankings shift constantly in a non-transparent way, but it’s very obvious when a Twitter user is banned. A search canary, kind of like a warrant canary.

Ironically the most famous Canary is, of course, Tweetybird.

It also means Google will come hard after you to either crush you or buy you out, that's if you start a search engine.

In coming years, the monopolistic nature of internet giants will come to an end. There will be categorical ecommerce, search, social media with target audiences which will survive together as an ecosystem.

Flights, hotels, and other commerce related categories come to mind, but those are mainly based on filters being unavailable on google, not SEO, so what categories are we talking about?

Feels like cooking/recipes would be solid one in terms of being broken by SEO. How good could you be in cooking and how valuable? That’s harder, probably not a great niche to start with.
