There are entire classes of searches for which Google is near worthless; has been SEOd to death

Isn’t that inherently impossible? If you set up a codified system to score things, you’re necessarily creating a game that can be optimized to win?

As an SEO by trade, there are 2 facets: 1. SEO to manipulate crap sites to the top (much harder these days) 2. SEO to help good sites by making sure users AND search engines can understand and are satisfied with their content Any SEO worth their salt only does #2 ;)

How could you do this except by having a hand-curated search engine? (Which would then be filled with its own bias... unless its users were fine with that bias) Is the future of the search engine decentralized?

Yep, I would use that search engine. I have to append reddit to queries that have really bad SERPs. Maybe they could make it better by putting more emphasis on self-policing communities.

Which in turn means that you might be able to launch a new search engine by starting out as a niche search engine for some category that has been blasted by SEO. It must be a valuable category, and your search engine would have to be good to survive.
