I think it’s courageous that Twitter is trying to fight misinformation by forcing retweet to be more thoughtful, particularly around a critical election. People don’t like it when their cheese is moved but there is a noble objective here.

One thing is quote tweets as a conversation... but maybe what they're aiming to encourage is "say something about this tweet rather than simply passing it along"?

Opting in to an account’s retweets instead of having to opt out seems like a better, but slower, solution.

Do they even mean well? I can see jack Dorsey being earnest but unsure if behind him is a group of ideologues tugging at him to fight for their team

I think it's less about encouraging reasonable discourse per se, but about generally slowing down the spread of information. i.e. it's less about the quote and more about the fact that it takes 2 clicks (plus typing) to RT now, so there will be some drop-off in the number of RTs

For example on Reddit I've complained that the platform is really slow to surface things, but from a perspective of disinformation/safety that means there's more time for downvotes + moderators to address things before it reaches everyone

Exactly—it’s a conflict of interests. More generally, I wouldn’t trust a company with an engagement-maximizing profit motive to effectively encourage reasonable discourse.

I agree with paul here. Theres very (very) little political science literature on promoting healthy conservation, especially online.
@jack is gonna need to heavily invest in original research before landing on a feature that works because very little works so far -
In fact there is a wealth of research in this area, from
@EthanZ@shannimcg@Arfung@SusanBenesch@kmmunger@natematias and more. [Responsible] experimentation is a valuable way for Twitter and others to push the field forward. - Show replies
