Some of it, but much does happen intentionally, either in classes or in self-directed study, and a lot happens when trying to make things and solve problems. It's interesting to ask which type happens where. I could believe most education about customs happens in the margins.

Right — a skill or a trade happens with deliberate practice (the pianist and the scales, the metaphor that I believe is originally
@tylercowen’s?) which is almost definitionally not the margins. Customs, and definitely habits, comes when you’re not paying active attention. -
The habitus as defined by Pierre Bourdieu sheds an interesting (sociological) light on it. Especially if you consider this in the context of the role social, cultural, and economic capital play in the active/passive forming of skills and customs.
