This is very dangerous view.
Why?
Many things kill teenagers (abuse, poverty, health). We have a range of proven interventions that can help.
No evidence that smartphones cause widespread teenage mortality. Focus on
takes attention away from things that really matter.https://twitter.com/mark_lynas/status/1319222412123267073 …

Could be that more and more parents got smart phones and spent more time on them than interacting with their own kiddos. Tough mirror to look in so much easier to put it on the kids. Reminds me of the “I learned it from watching you” drug affirm the 90’s

The graph would be better with cohorts — e.g is a 17 yr old in 2011 more likely to be depressed when they’re 21 in 2015?

Wrong take... it is far more likely tied to the riser of identity politics.

It also seems a reasonable theory that boomers have left nothing for future generations and millennials are pissed about it. No action on climate change, unaffordable housing, UBI for the rich via QE (thanks Fed), shit low wage jobs etc. What type of future have you left for them
-
Why would that take off in 2011, though? Most of those either started in 2008 (bailouts) or the 90s (global warming, expensive houses). And low wages for young people are as old as wages.

150 people was the initial average number of any given user’s facebook friends. Read somewhere that it was related to number of people historically we could have some interaction with in the physical world. Now we have +500 contacts anywhere...
