I don't understand what "mission-driven" really means. Everyone talks about investing in a "mission-driven" company but isn't EVERY company a mission-driven company? What are examples of companies that aren't?
-
-
Is that true though? If they're mission is to function as a market maker, allocate capital, etc. aren't they still mission-driven?
-
I don't think that is their mission though. I think that's just something people in finance say to justify their existence.

Making money without regard can also be a mission.

At the beginning probably GS was "mission-driven". Big banks these days should be treated like a set of very distinct businesses fused together under a logo and legal entity.

Matured companies are market driven. The word mission complements vision. A company like Apple had a vision and they made it a mission to achieve it. Although now it is purely market driven; Apple will not create great products if it can't make money out of it.
-
Also compare Apple to someone that creates fans. Apple would in ncontrast look like mission driven with a vision. It is relative.
