How come we're so much richer than we were in the 19th Century, and interest rates are lower now, but our buildings are typically uglier?
Bad century to pick as an example. If you suggested any century prior to the 19th you'd have a much better case. The answer is the lifting of constraints that happened with industrialization in the 19th century.

But he didn't pick a different century. Maybe I'm missing your point (very possible, not sure I get it). But why did buildings peak then and get uglier. I'll push it a bit further why did architecture plummet after art deco?

Like did elite consensus push awful brutalism on an unappreciative public for nearly a century? Can that happen in other areas? Or was elite consensus a rationalization to justify underlying forces for why we had to accept brutalism that no one really wanted?

Still, I actually agree. Any beautiful building worth preserving was built at turn of century... whereas we should just bulldoZe over every building built in 70s and 80s.
