The only part of the so-called startup curve I named was the Trough of Sorrow. The other names were added by Trevor Blackwell, mostly (e.g. Crash of Ineptitude, Upside of Buyer) as a somewhat cynical joke.pic.twitter.com/4DlyhWiaXg

This graph was originally drawn on a whiteboard. I asked one of the startups in the batch that included several designers to make a digital version of it for me. They were so busy that they never got around to it. (The startup was Airbnb.)

We've been following your advice for many years at @invoiceninja, you're words have been a north star to us. Our initial spike was largely thanks to Hacker News. I think we've made it through our Trough of Sorrow, it was a sad and lonely time...pic.twitter.com/nISQ1xqjgK

I really like the terms. They provide you with clear ideas of what to expect during the stage. It reminds me of crossing the chasm. The y-axis describes the level of expectation, right?

Conquer the Trough of Sorrow by seeking Enlightened Empathy: being so close to the people that you design for that it informs you in a way that a survey never could. Don’t just speak to you users, go to them! Strive to see the world the way your users do.
