If power is 20x as expensive at night because solar becomes so cheap, how do your habits change? Washing machine on a timer so the clothes are done when you get home? Car charging primarily at work? Heating or cooling a mass during the day?https://www.carbonbrief.org/solar-is-now-cheapest-electricity-in-history-confirms-iea …

This question only matters insofar as battery technology can't keep up.

At the last job we were doing electric pumped rocket engines, so I can say that batteries still suck. But if the electricity gets cheap enough then more grid scale storage (pumped hydro, etc.) will come online and keep the differential down to maybe 3x.

in a stationary context, aren’t their better ways to store energy than battery?

Right now in Denmark, we have this problem, as wind generation is high at night, and no one is using it. Energi pricing is actually 0 or even negative. This has resulted in apps for timed charging of EVs etc.

Batteries are already being used to offset time of use demand charges. See what @Sunrun is doing

You can pump water up a hill all day and release it at night. It’s a like battery.

Fly wheels can also be used as an efficient and durable system to store electricity for a short duration.

How feasible would it be to reduce storage needs by feeding power from places in daylight to places that are in nighttime?

There’s ideas for high voltage DC additions to national and global grids, but right now the capability doesn’t exist much at all. In the US there was a plan to improve interconnection between the regional grids but Trumpites killed it.https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/08/how-trump-appointees-short-circuited-grid-modernization/615433/ …
