Accepting randomness is simply too hard for most of us.
Something I taught my sons today: When something bad happens to people, they are so eager to know why that they often prefer a false explanation to a truthful "We don't know." (They asked why some people are against vaccines.)

Especially when the explanation adds villains to the world. It can be difficult to accept that sometimes nature itself is cruel, and no particular set of people is responsible for one's grief.

can't wait to teach my future sons that there's three inevitabilities in life: death, taxes, and vaccines always being purely altruistic and inherently awesome regardless of the fact that there's a legal framework in place to prevent recourse against adverse reactions or outcomes
