Information theory explains why orthodoxy is boring. Information ≈ surprise, and orthodox statements are never surprising. So they contain less information than unorthodox ones. Sometimes so little that they feel almost suffocating.

Orthodox statements passed the test of time, they work. This carries information, too.

And yet, as St. Exupery puts it, rites are to time what a home is to space. You don’t want things to boring, but a little boring is good. In a umber of contexts the orthodox statements can create the scene for a productive unorthodox discussion!

Similarly, information theory explains why boldly going against mainstream is 'cool'. Cool = informative in a powerful way.

So what information does this statement contain? Is it orthodox or not?

And *always* opposing orthodoxy is as information-less as orthodoxy itself.
