Something that surprised me about parenting, though it's obvious in retrospect: You have much less control over the age at which your younger children learn things, because the older ones tell them everything.

With great subtlety. I give them answers that aren't false, and yet which don't tell them anything I don't want them to know. This can sometimes be very difficult. Then I play for time by seeming distracted with something and saying I'll tell them later.
