"Commerce... is apt to decay in absolute governments, not because it is there less secure, but because it is less honourable." — Hume (I.e. the reason autocracies are poor is that it's more prestigious to be one of the dictator's minions than to build things.)

(Today's insight from Hume brought to you courtesy of the fools at the University of Edinburgh who decided to cancel him, thereby causing me to start reading his essays.)

Because this is Twitter and full constant nonsense I thought you were talking about Brit Hume at first...

He can also be the master of compression. Here is his six page abstract of his treatise on human nature. http://web.mnstate.edu/gracyk/courses/web%20publishing/hume%27sabstract.htm …

Great quote. Sorta amusing to ban someone who said that only way resistance can flourish is if it is banned. 🤯 Seems like they may have missed his point? 🤔

Those who are canceled usually have very high integrity. It’s a surprising marker of quality

Hume is brilliant. He was hundreds of years ahead of his time on a number of topics. (Sadly, he wasn't on race.)

Einstein was inspired from Hume. The concept of relativity was first explained by Hume in his Treatise of Human Nature. Proof by negation was a concept which Hume popularised which became the foundations of science. Do I need to say more?

I was blissfully unaware of Hume's cancellation by Edinburgh (does quick Google search)... now I have one more data point that the world is really messed up.

I took a few engineering classes next to 'DHT' 20 years ago & walk past the building often. Thankfully the Scottish Enlightment continues to exist alongside an evolving awareness of racism. 👇https://twitter.com/PeterMcColl/status/1306178527990079490?s=20 …

Another former Rector here... David Hume hasn't been 'cancelled’. In the past year @EdinburghUni appointed three Hume specialists in Philosophy, including a Chair. Hyperbole doesn't help anyone. And surely the really important questions aren't about the naming of buildings.
