It's pretty exciting to find oneself routinely using "subsonic" as a name for a category of airliners.

The boom seats not being fully reclining beds makes it less attractive imo. A 12h biz-class flight where you can properly sleep "feels like" 4h, a 7h flight where you can't feels like 7h. Hope they can get costs down and compete with economy/premium-econ soon!

Try this thought experiment: imagine an airline flew NYC to SF with such slow planes that it took 12 hours, but they told you it would be a great experience because they'd give you a bed. How excited would you be to fly on this airline?

Is it a brothel in the sky? A great experience sleeping?

I actually experienced this tradeoff in China, taking Shanghai <-> Beijing trains. You can have a 5h daytime fast-train or a 12h overnight train. I was roughly indifferent between the two.

Ok on second thought at 4h40 I preferred the daytime ones, but if it was >6h I would certainly have preferred the overnight sleepers

Can we have gambling during the 12 hour flight? Leave on Sunday a few hours before the first NFL games start, Sports book open from your seat. Poker & Blackjack tables. Slots from your seat. You'll have a long waiting list.

The plane jettisons its passenger section with a parachute over international waters. A completely different airline picks it up midair, and flies toward the destination, with arbitrary Fun Stuff inflight. Near the destination another changeover happens. Easy.

I don’t even think you need a bed - it’s completely beyond me why airlines don’t tilt all seats 15 degrees backward to have a more comfortable distribution of weight and provide an honest headrest so people can sleep in the chair...

I've thought about this a lot. NYC --> SF take the fast plane as you still get a day. leave 6am & have full day in SF SF --> NYC slow plane as you lose so much of a day in tz difference that an nice overnight with a decent sleep would be preferred. leave late PM arrive AM
