Where did the phrase “the Before Times” originate? I think I first heard it on @MBMBaM. It appears in this @washingtonpost article:pic.twitter.com/iQ3NgstLYa

I thought it referred to the NYT before they turned super PC in the first half of the 2010s. That's how @antoniogm used it.

It's funniest if it's about the NYT. And also more optimistic, because it's not the world that has shifted forever, just one increasingly irrelevant publication.

Within its current audience perhaps, but its audience used to be much larger. When I was growing up, it was literally the last word in news.

Link baiting is how you getting page views and ads (see Gawker, Vox, Buzzfeed) Picking a side is how you get subscriptions (New NYTimes, Ben Shapiro, public radio, etc). Incentives matter

The side pickers use clickbait too. People aren't going to subscribe if you don't get them to the site.

Heck of funnel... and just think of the retargeting ability.

I think they fail on the funnel They create content that leverages social discord so their readers compete with each other in driving traffic. But then they just throw up a derivative paywall rather than spending a little time on selling each individual story 1/2
