Doing something to look impressive to other people has got to be the single worst reason to ever do something.

For this reason alone I find it super important to surround myself with people better than me. I'm subconsciously competing to impress them. It's best when this feeling is shared!

to be fair, most people aren't Rober Morris. In fact, no-one else is.

I once heard it said that "a lot of great songs were only written because somebody wanted to fuck someone".

Are you writing to impress Robert Morris or do you want your writing to impress Robert Morris?
-
I like this distinction, because it captures the risk of gamifying, and so cheapening, the feedback of those you admire. Ideally you'd only admire those who can see through such shenanigans, but the world is far from ideal.

There's a nuance to Mckay's diction ("other" – within the American English dialect) and your response misses that. Robert Morris is almost an extension of your self. Your point doesn't contradict his.
-
Calling Robert Morris almost an extension of your self was a reference to the nature of self-ness within the context of cultural and tribal identity. I don't have the exact language to articulate the distinction but there is a rational one somewhere.

In this case writing is something you already enjoy. If you pair what you enjoy with wanting to impress someone, I get that. But what if you didn’t like writing and wanted to impress him anyways? That’s more what I’m talking about - doing it for the sole reason of impressing.
-
Maybe you still disagree, but just wanted to clarify that distinction.
