Jessica and I were just saying the same thing this afternoon. It's strange to think that anyone who entered the tech world after about 2012 doesn't even know how great it used to be.

It started about 2012. The first successful cultural takeover was occupy wall street. Few people know this but the reason it fizzled is critical theory types killed it and wore its skin, so it stopped being about economic opportunity and started being about race.

Isn’t this partially because tech become more diverse. When more people get invited into the room they bring their real world problems with them?

No, I don't think so. Though the tech world was quite diverse in 2012, it still wasn't very "diverse."

It certainly used to feel more magical and undiscovered. The smartphone, I think, helped folks reimagine how people might want to interact with technology.

Once tech became the worlds most valuable, powerful and influential industry it has to grow up. That means regulation, politics, dealing with its impact on society broadly. By winning so thoroughly, it couldn’t & shouldn’t stay the same - it was never great for everybody..
