Unfortunately, those two phenomena got us Trump. So maybe more direct democracy is not good. I believe @GarettJones wrote a book about this. I haven't read it, but I miss the days when elections were as boring as Reagan vs Mondale.
Possibly not. But on the other hand, democracy is probably now more direct than ever before. Primary candidates can go around party machines, and more people decide for themselves who to vote for instead of being told by their unions.
