Just realized that Jessica and I have donated more to defeating Trump than to any other cause. Which sucks. As in literally sucks huge amounts of money away from important problems. This is a hidden but very significant cost of increasing polarization.

I think you're wasting that money. Trump is the symptom, not the disease. Defeating Trump will not restore sanity, civil mindedness, or equanimity. That's the real pathology, and your money would be better spent trying to treat that.

It's true he's a symptom, but symptoms do have to be treated too, and he's a particularly bad one. I have some ideas about how to address the underlying problem. But first things first.

Do you have an article that is more specific to what you believe the causes are as opposed to the symptom?

Out of curiosity - do you think someone with different beliefs could have valid criticisms of Trump? Or would any criticism by OMB?

Part of that era you describe was white men being firmly in control. In some ways, I see Trump as the last gasp of some wanting to cling to that. Look at how many institutions right now are controlled by a minority of voters

This reminds me of Dialectic of Enlightenment. The Frankfurt School posits that social and technological development leads to facism. In Freudian terms when the Ego abandons the Id.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialectic_of_Enlightenment …

Fragmentation in of itself = >options. In reading his article I’m not sure he’s saying fragmentation is a threat but it’s part of why we’re where we are. We are more different now in many many facets of life / have more choice. But also means polarization & wealth inequality

I follow your lead into Trump =) In that manner, I suppose Bernie Sanders, if POTUS, would probably represent the symptom just as well. If not afford a new problem of cost implementation if many of his policies were able to be enacted... Per your article, still too far upstream.

What I See: Big tech bred a new class of loser, took the money, & offloaded the losers of variation to the gov to care for. They authored platforms incentivized around ad revenue & attention economies using "free" products to isolate & absolve them from responsibility to users.pic.twitter.com/Y3H1BiWvBv

When will tech founders have enough money to reshift their focus to finding undervalued resources (people), the future Paul Graham's and so on? Sitting on a treasure trove of personal data and networks of interactions, they could easily find a target set of said individuals.
