“I’m sorry for writing such a long letter, I had no time for a short one.” This quote implies that the generative process is easier than the editing one. The myth of the artist as a generative genius may be false. More likely that top artists are geniuses in editing.

Well, not really. Only in the sense that a writer who started with a page of random letters and had to turn it into an interesting essay or story could be said to be editing.

It takes a lot of time to shorten what you wrote without losing its meaning or contents. In my experience that takes the bulk of the 'creation' time, especially when you are on a word limit. I wouldn't want to call that 'editing' though.
