has anyone tried to build a "pay to use" facebook? If so, why didn't it work? If not, why do you think no one has tried it?

True, college students are young, inquisitive, concupiscent. Matching that with fb in back in 2005 was the perfect combination of timing, demand and well-built social network. Today is different though, I think. Plenty of good options (Insta, snap, tiktok and fb)

I guess the challenge with communities is rate of adoption: they don’t have much value until they get big, it’s difficult to get them to grow big when they’re a paid service You’d need a seed community of maybe around 1k cool users that don’t pay, and maybe charge from then on

I wonder if that specific audience may be created if they believe in a common mission, like for us , I am seeing it may be open-ended Play for children till 5 yrs and providing the support this community may need. Trust gets developed too though it’s a a very small group yet.

Good point. We build it for content creators at http://locals.com .... Each creator has their own subscription-based community where they can engage with their supporters. Time to unbundle.

1/ Hear me out for a moment...I always wanted to build a social network that encouraged local engagement. Foundations would be based on two things all people care about: their kids (school) and taxes (where are they going locally).
-
2/ There would be constrains on flow of information from country/district to next country district and so-on for national audience. So while something may be particularly relevant to local area, it doesn't flood other sections of the network just due to popularity.

#MeWe is the FB alternative with no ads, no targeting, no data mining, etc. We have a "freemium" revenue model - all the great social features are free, plus there are optional enhancements you can purchase. Nearly 10M users already & growing rapidly!https://video.foxbusiness.com/v/video-embed.html?video_id=6078675583001&embedver=orion …Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
