We take for granted censorship of movies and TV shows that we'd be shocked at in books. Do we give books a pass because they're the way the elite communicate? Or are books ignored because the audience is so much smaller? Probably some of both.

Imagine if, for example, the National Book Awards announced that a novel couldn't win unless it contained certain types of characters. It would seem pretty shocking. And yet when the Oscars impose such restrictions it seems par for the course.

I think also it is much more shocking to actually see details depicted in books rather than read about them. Visual system is the one that infers the most information out of everything

Books are special. We don't put advertisements in books like we do in television shows. We would feel disgusted. We give books a pass because books have the ability to communicate the inner world and change your life. Whereas songs, movies, tv shows haven't changed anyones life

Whoa! I never thought about advertisement in books. Just curious, why don't we see in ads in books?

Few visible large targets, also adds to the problems, I guess. Also easier to disrupt, e.g. twitter trend far more easier to do, than a street protest.

Most people don't read books. And only a small percentage of those who do read are likely to pick *that* book.

Books require way more effort on your part to access the shocking content. That commitment is a natural proof that you can manage the shock. Censoring content that could be unmanageable makes some sense (not a big fan, though). Censoring content that is manageable is a crime.
