Did you grow up thinking infrared rhymed with repaired? So many years of reading books about fighter planes before I got the correct pronunciation in high school...

My wife is incredibly well-read but even after 16 years together sometimes I'll still hear her say a word totally wrong. So many words she only ever came across in books but never heard out loud!

As someone who has never lived in an English speaking country, there have been many words (e.g. "albeit") that I read dozens of times before eventually hearing them spoken years later.

When I was 9, I read all of Harry Potter pronouncing Hermione as Her-mee-own. Didn't realise the correct pronunciation until I saw the movies.
