Loss of faith in Old Media orgs like the NYT is blamed on New Media, but has much to do with how Old Media has tried to compete with New Media: through partisan cheerleading & sensationalist exhibitionism driven by a desperation to be heard over the din of YouTubers & Twitterati.

This is so true - I had been a subscriber for 2 decades till around a year ago. Add Economist too, see strong hints of partisan vs nonpartisan capitalism, and narrowing free markets to US.

Few want to be journalists anymore. Blind partisanship is lucrative, investigative journalism is not. More lucrative or promising opportunities for ambitious, talented and idealistic people elsewhere. Plus, the industry is just brutally competitive now.
