The existence of moderates must be unsettling to extremists. If everyone who disagreed with them was an other-side extremist, they could feel more confident that they were right. But they must wonder where we get our opinions, why we sometimes agree with them, and sometimes not.
This uncomfortable feeling must be part of the reason extremists put so much energy into portraying anyone who disagrees with them as an other-side extremist, or at best an intentional moderate (http://paulgraham.com/mod.html ).
If there's another way of disagreeing with them besides being an other-side extremist or intentional moderate, what is it? It must suggest alarming hypotheses when the extremist compares his neatly matching set of opinions with the variegated ones of accidental moderates.

You're solving a tribal problem and the way to do that is by having national programs to unite people in America of different backgrounds and idea. Corporate America and Higher education have failed us in this area.

Survivor bias makes them remember only those times when you disagree with them, so I would think they do believe that you are an other side extremist.
The essay reminded me of that time one senator disagreed with the other 99 by voting 50/50 two articles of impeachment.
