To people who don't understand startups, it seems overreaching and even irresponsible that they focus so much on growth. People who do know that when you're making something new, this is the only way to know if it's what users want.

@paulg I think that's your perspective of what you think a startup should be. The standard definition of a startup as per the dictionary or Google or what is commonly believed is that a startup is 'a newly established business' or 'the process of setting something in motion'

We referred to the Oxford, Cambridge & Merriam-Webster dictionaries before & Google now. So all 4 of these. BTW, nothing against your definition & I'm a big fan of your essays & have flown from Mumbai to Mountain View for my YC interview in May '16 & i was awestruck to see PG! :)

A Startup is a human institution designed to create new products and services under conditions of extreme uncertainty...I think this is the standard definition of a startup.
