To people who don't understand startups, it seems overreaching and even irresponsible that they focus so much on growth. People who do know that when you're making something new, this is the only way to know if it's what users want.

Precisely. The best top line metric is to start with yourself. We believe we are individuals but there are way more people who are similar to us than we think. These similar people have again friends who are similar to them.

And by categorizing the people who also do. By understanding how they look at the problem(s). And by understanding problems and possible solution deeper than everybody else. Which can lead to a solution people dont know they want until they see your mockup.
