The most successful ones. Some are in it just for the money. But for the most successful founders, the company is also their project in the same way a painting or book (or a piece of software) is for its creator.
Incidentally, there's nothing wrong with starting a startup to make money. You need money to live, after all. But if you're motivated only by money, you'll find it hard to turn down the acquisition offers that most successful startups get en route.

As a founder what should your filter for the idea be to make you eschew money, glory, power, fame & equity? I can only think of a few filters Must this happen for humanity's sake? Must this happen quickly? Is it obvious? Do I want this to happen? (Seems like a weak filter)

It isn’t just about acquisition offers but all the other decisions too — big and small. Are they centred around making money or solving a problem for your users/customers? Those 1000s of small decisions set the direction, values, and ultimate destination of the company.
