What does being cancelled mean?
Since everyone in the past believed things that would get you cancelled today, the factor that determines whether they'll actually be cancelled is whether or not they happened to publish such beliefs. Which is almost random, but not quite; those who wrote little are safer.

Many of the people in the past that were "cancelled"

When you hold an unacceptable opinion to yourself, only your behavior will be able to trigger external reactions. When you publish it for everyone to see, the exposure is much higher.
