The USPS had a plan to send 5 reusable facemarks to every household in early April. Even had a press release ready. The White House blocked the plan. “There was concern...that households receiving masks might create concern or panic." https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2020/09/17/usps-trump-coronavirus-amazon-foia/ …pic.twitter.com/v4BLKRMPOc

Where were they going to get that many masks in April? Even hospitals couldn't get enough then.

Hospitals need a particular type of mask conforming to an N95 specification, designed to protect the wearer from infection by patients who are known to be ill. Masks used by ordinary citizens can be much simpler, designed mainly to stop the wearer spreading germs to others.

Consequently, it would have been much easier to obtain large numbers of ordinary masks than N95 masks, and the two sets of demand need not have competed with each other. I'm willing to trust that the USPS could have done it.

“reusable cotton” in contrast to disposable N95s. sounds like something any apparel / textile manufacturer could make

Based on their wording, they where going to get 650 million material masks, not 650 million N95 or surgical masks. Way better than nothing, would've had a huge positive impact on the pandemic, but not as good as N95 (to state the obvious)

How much of an impact? There never seemed to be a huge shortage for a prolonged period of time in terms of regular masks.

Postal worker here. The masks given to us are the ones I’m assuming are the ones this article is talking about. They’re plain white cotton masks with silver in the thread. They’re nice but really small. Came in packs of 5. I gave mine away.

I was 3D Printing masks using Antibacterial PLA Plastic and giving them away on the Neighbors App and donating them as well. It was so expensive to buy this, normal PLA about $22.50, this was almost $110 shipped.pic.twitter.com/EhQ3JtHT4W

These are reusable ones, probably like the USPS branded ones they've been wearing, probably had a vendor lined up already.
