My grandfather was a policeman. When he proposed to my grandmother, her attention was distracted by a sign saying that anyone loitering in the area would be taken into custody by the police. She laughed at the thought that she already was, and didn't notice he'd proposed.
He, meanwhile, thought that she was laughing at his proposal, and was affronted. It was some weeks before they sorted things out.
Which goes to show that profligate use of signage can cause inadvertent harm.
