It's bad to be sensitive to events, which you mostly can't control, but good to be sensitive to e.g. works of art and conversation, which you mostly can. https://davidhume.org/texts/emp/dt

The callow undergrads who tried to cancel Hume can't have derived as much pleasure from it as I have from reading his essays as a result. And I might never have done this if it hadn't been for them. So almost against my will my indignation is turning into gratitude.

If you can't control your emotions, you have no shot at being successful.

Bad news, he’s been cancelled I’m afraid. Hard to keep up with the pace I know.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-54138247 …

That's what made me start reading his essays.

In the brain, stress is inversely proportional to our sense of control and directly proportional to perceived self-relevance to stimuli. Decouple your sense of self relevance for that you don't control, focus on that which you do = less stress.

Always wondered how much of the differences between sensitive / stoic temperaments are tied up in expressiveness... Maybe we feel the same joy / anger etc and some learn to keep it 'inside', while others show their emotions more freely... some mix of felt and expressed maybe?

It's not about showing emotions. Stoicism is about being in control of your actions rather than being reactive to your emotions

I liked "The judgment may be compared to a clock or watch, where the most ordinary machine is sufficient to tell the hours; but the most elaborate alone can point out the minutes and seconds."
