I was looking at some photographs of Silicon Valley people from 10-15 years ago, and it's amazing how happy everyone seems. Because no one in the outside world cared what we were doing.pic.twitter.com/IXLsITjwqL

A serious non-troll question. Have you reflected/written up your feelings on the ways tech has gone wrong (define that as you like) over the period of YC, why, and how you figure in that? Because people care now, smile less, and not without reason.

I don't think it has gone wrong so much as that when you become successful you attract a lot of carpetbaggers and haters. When someone talked about startups in 2005, it was because they cared about startups. But you can't assume that in 2020.

Is it not possible that the more important issue is that with great success comes greater responsibility? It’s impossible to be at the center of the world and also have nobody outside the community care what you’re doing or notice the negative externalities from your work.

Sure. But even if you were perfectly responsible, the money would still attract carpetbaggers and haters.

Of course, but is it really the carpetbaggers and haters that are responsible for Silicon Valley’s loss of joy? Seems like most of it is the natural scrutiny that comes with success combined with the mindbendingly fast shift from 90s/00s era “cheerleader” tech press to today

Mostly, yes. If the carpetbaggers and haters disappeared and all you had weighing you down was the additional sense of responsibility, I think you'd probably still have, say, 80% of the joy of the early days.

How would you define "carpetbaggers and haters?" I have found more than a few SV folks who largely lump any critic into the "hater" camp. IMHO - The current environment is creating an "un-virtuous circle" where SV increasingly adopts a victimhood complex and critics --> haters
