3 Phases of an ambitious new undertaking: 1. It doesn't work yet. 2. It starts to work, but no one else realizes yet. 3. Everyone knows it works. The second phase is when you're the happiest, but you don't realize that till a few years into the third.

Phase 4: People try to disrupt/copy/criticize you because it works. I’m always interested watching the media turn on a startup they supported as an underdog and vilify as a victor. Few companies maintain the warm glow of a startup as a large company.

I wonder how one could sustain a similar level of happiness in phase 3 as experienced in phase 2. Maybe better work life balance at that stage? What did you do to get back to that level?

That's difficult because YOU DON'T really know when you are in phase 3. You also genuinely miss the grind of being in phase 2 and fighting to make the product or service work. Some people genuinely are less happy when they realize they've achieved their goal. New challenge next.
