What are some examples of companies that seemed non-viable... until all the sudden they weren’t? PayPal was burning tons of cash and was getting eaten alive by fraud... until they figured that out Tesla had awful unit economics and couldn’t produce at scale... until they did

Airbnb didn't grow till they started helping hosts improve their listings.

I remember they worried at the time that this would be cheating — that they wouldn't be able to keep doing this once they were big. I told them they had nothing to lose, because if they didn't, the company would die in a couple months anyway.

An interesting question. You need x to survive as a company. How could you “cheat” and make it happen now, even if that way is unsustainable? I guess that’s “do things that don’t scale”

I think the “how could you cheat to make that happen tomorrow?” framing equally interesting. Wish I had that two years ago.

Another framing is "What's the minimum thing required to get to the next user doubling?" Then you automatically transition from "do things that don't scale" to "do things that are more streamlined" and so onhttps://medium.com/bloated-mvp/the-lean-mvp-flowchart-add48d7bcbae …

What can you say to people who think you can’t scale past the ‘cheat code’, we serve college girls and some people think Adla won’t work outside colleges.
