Historically, renaming things has not been a good sign. It usually falls on a continuum from bogus (liberty sausages) to totalitarian (Kampuchea). Though one end of this continuum is comparatively harmless, there is nothing good on it. Productive people have other things to do.

The point of this essay is not that you should rename your company, but that you should have a .com name. Renaming is merely a consequence of tlds being namespaces.

Lol.. and you don’t think other issues and players have similarly and sufficiently legitimate reasons for renaming?

Your name (per se) is far more important than your TLD. Too many companies, regretfully, will change, add, subtract letters to a word just to secure a http://name.com . It's desperate. Not a good look. Not a good name. #naming

Maybe true, but having a confusing domain name with a generic brand name will lead to confused customers and lost or misdirected emails sent to other companies. Depending on the brand, those emails could go to the competition.

A thoughtful, distinctive name is one of the best investments in time a startup can make. Starting out right avoids so many unnecessary issues later.

In the U.S. a co. domain name is just as important as the company's name itself. Customers tend to stick with what they are familiar with, thus will more than likely visit a website with .com at the end of the name. In other countries, companies usually go with country's ccTLD

i think it's dangerous to say this. .com = global web presence .cc = country specific web presence selling a entity on a one or two word .com only makes them targets to a lager business...so it has a cannibalizing effect on a industry and could lead to market space dissonance.
