How much of startup success is normal people willing to have a not-normal life? As opposed to not-normal people doing 9-5? Bit of both?

This sounds like it might be an interesting question if I could understand it. Can you explain more about what you mean?

Sounds like an Intensity vs Inspiration question.

sounds to me like the question is how much incentive is necessary to motivate a person with normal preferences (9-5 etc) to live a "startup" life and vice versa

Looking forward to the rewording from Jokull, but interpreting it as: Is [startup] success mostly down to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, or extraordinary people doing ordinary things?

Or maybe the question is: What’s the chance of building a $100m startup by working 40 hours a week vs 80 hours? My guess would be significantly lower.

How I understand it: can 'average' people succeed with a startup when they invest above-average resources (time, effort). Or is the formular for success rather: above-average people putting in rather an average amount of resources. So basically: nature vs nurture

Neither is enough. You need more than 9-5 from more-than-normal resourceful ppl. I think you already have a good answer to this q, @paulg: Relentlessly resourceful http://www.paulgraham.com/relres.html  Relentless: won't stop at 9-5 Resourceful: try more-than-normal new ways to solve things

What is required of founders for success? Long sprints of productivity due to total devotion vs the intuition, experience and smartness. Can startups succeed without either? Having kids changes this formula, I think. /cc @tobi

I think there are examples of success in both categories but I cannot think of any examples that are in neither category except for unethical things like Ponzi schemes
