There's always a natural element for who grabs everyone's attention, it then probably has a reinforcing loop. Trump is more charismatic than Biden too, but at some point professional political class will bind a coalition to say that it doesn't mean you get to govern.

The counter point here actually is 2016. Clinton got more votes. And a lot more votes. Trump won the election. You’re probably onto something but it’s not as bulletproof as you claim here.

Since electoral votes are what wins elections, those are what campaigns contend for, and thus how you measure which campaign had more appeal.
