A lot of ambitious people spend the early part of their lives in credential-seeking mode. But you'll hit a wall if you're still in this mode when you start a startup. Making what users want is a completely different m.o. from charming authorities and doing well on tests.

Work for organizations so large that individual performance can't be measured.

When a startup is acquired by a big company, this is one of the toughest cultural changes to manage. Incentives can easily shift from “do the right thing” to “do what is explainable and defensible” without the right leadership.
