FWIW, the opposite is true. At YC, one of the clearest patterns is how diligently the breakout companies participate in the program. The Airbnbs were always the first to show up for dinners and the last to leave.
There are definitely a handful of startups that "take the money and ignore the program." They tend to be founded by recent graduates of elite universities who are still in credential-seeking mode. They almost always do badly.

I'm mainly talking about 2nd and 3rd tier accelerators that are meant to provide some specific network (e.g. the Disney accelerator, which is what inspired this.) From what I've heard, the network is great, but having a program just gets in the way.
