There are definitely a handful of startups that "take the money and ignore the program." They tend to be founded by recent graduates of elite universities who are still in credential-seeking mode. They almost always do badly.
FWIW, the opposite is true. At YC, one of the clearest patterns is how diligently the breakout companies participate in the program. The Airbnbs were always the first to show up for dinners and the last to leave.
