In Spain, there's a curious similarity between (a) long Moorish control after 711 and (b) low literacy rates in 1900. Did the first help cause the second? I'm genuinely unsure. (Except in Galicia, I have no idea why Galicians are outliers.)pic.twitter.com/Ls1FwfiY6h

There is probably a greater correlation between literacy rates and centers of the medieval wool trade. That was the big industry of the later middle ages, and was responsible for other hotspots of sophistication in e.g. Flanders and Northern Italy.

How have you come to have such knowledge of specific historical periods? Can you recommend books for getting a broad sweep to start with?

Bartlett’s Making of Europe, Wickham’s Inheritance of Rome, and the old BBC Connections series.

Perfect place to insert a plug for Wolf Hall and the rest of the Mantel novels about Oliver Cromwell.

Property of the land, also an inheritance from the middle ages. South of Spain historically has more latifundium and mortmains. That created an agrarian society with few landlords. That changed somehow with land confiscation in XIX century, but the scars are still noticeable.
