We disproportionately imprison poor people without addressing the underlying poverty related issues in this country (actually All over the world). This affects the whole family of the imprisoned, starting from taking away support to stigma that comes with imprisonment. Sad!

Social welfare in the US is very strong. The only people who have to threaten others with stabbing to secure enough food to survive are the violently mentally ill who rightfully deserve to be institutionalized.

I object to such an extreme sentence, but he got life not because he stole $50 but because he had previous convictions and (while on probation) walked into a bakery, pulled out a knife, and threatened to stab someone unless they gave him money.
