In all of the discussion about AB5, it seems underreported that a significant majority of the tech platform workers seem to prefer the contractor model. Below survey done by former driver. (https://therideshareguy.com/california-sues-uber-and-lyft-for-misclassifying-workers/ ….) Different company found 80% majority prefer contractor status.pic.twitter.com/mFNkwXMbMF

I asked someone who knows about CA state politics, and the source of AB5 was the Teamsters, who wanted to capture Uber's drivers and couldn't do so unless they were employees.

The most frustrating part about this is that this is the oldest regulatory playbook ever. And folks like Lorena Gonzales still get away with it looking good in the eyes of most people.

What if the teamsters had gone after whatever rule it is that prevents them from organizing independent contractors? Why didn’t they seek to change that, instead of the technical employment status of the drivers?

Yep! AB5 was authored by Lorena Gonzales who was a union organizer before she was an Assemblywoman. To call her a union shill would be putting it lightly. I’ll let her say it in her own words:https://mobile.twitter.com/lorenasgonzalez/status/1134087876390428672?lang=en …

I left Argentina and moved to California, precisely, because of these dynamics. Peron was the founding father of these policies, unions taking the individual hostage, drowning all creative energy. There’s more to contractor status than whether people prefer it. I’d prefer to be considered a religion for tax purposes.

I agree asking Uber/Lyft to give employment status to every driver is ridiculous but to clarify are you on the other extreme end and saying they don't need tp change their model at all?

I believe Prop 22 would address that change in model. But there are millions of us ICs who are not drivers, and we also have been hurt AB5. Who wants this kind of paternalistic "protection"? Nobody asked any of us, drivers or otherwise, before this horrid bill was passed.

Why against all logic did AB5 pass? “Teamsters are organized. State and local govt is a contact sport, and they’re winning that sport. Logic has nothing to do with whether legislation is moving” (I’m just the messenger - this comes from a Dem strategist)
