"Overture is a craft designed to seat less than a hundred people at 'business class' levels of comfort. And for 'business class' prices, they’ll be able to fly from, say, Tokyo to Seattle in four hours and thirty minutes."https://www.engadget.com/boom-supersonic-xb-1-2021-130025910.html …

The reason Boom will be able to fly passengers supersonically for the price of current business class is that the flight times are so short that you don't need lie-flat seats. There's a lot of advanced tech in this plane, but that mundane fact is the key to the economics.

Really curious if they can pull it off. As aviation engineer I have my doubts.. Even Elon had a fair share of explosions, which they simply can't afford..

They're doing a much smaller version first. Looks like a 2-seater. My 12yo asked them (And they updated their FAQ), if the single delta overture will be able to use the short runways.

Also this can be done more economically now than when the Concorde was in service because, due to globalization, the number of routes where demand for this type of flight exists is way higher.

“Concorde was killed by economics” No mention of sonic boom or noise. Concorde was noisy on approach. I only saw it once when it made a trip below the equator. Heard it first, then rushed inside to just see it land on TV. I lived 70km from the airport.pic.twitter.com/y0XW9WJ6Vw

Noise killed market potential when cities decided the sound was more than they could handle. A lot of acoustic science came out that research. Inversion of waveforms to cancel to help reduce carpet boom. <http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2002/04/18/518221.htm …>pic.twitter.com/ZT1EvIWgLm

Ever ride a standing roller coaster? There's room for more "seating".

If capital sloshed about more freely in this box, I'd expect to see a mid-mount high-bypass turbofan engine on a trapezoidal wing, propelling a pointy nose Bombardier at Mach1.5 comfortably. Supersonic, yes. Invention, not so much.

The recline button could easily be removed from a lot (most?) of flights.

Physics and economics seem to be the big problems for supersonic flight. How do they solve the fuel economy problem for turbojet engines? Why does the time difference matter if I can sleep comfortably on the plane?
