I used to write code from after dinner (maybe 9 pm) till about 3 am. I'd sleep from 4 to 11, show up at the office around noon. This worked very well. But I didn't have a family when I did this.

Once you have kids, you have to get up early in the morning because they do — in the beginning, very early.

Not when I was working on Viaweb. I'd written a couple books, but I didn't start writing essays till 2001.
