we live in a time in which bad ideas that are simple and infectious win over unpalatable truths that nobody wants to hear. Social media amplifies appealing ideas, regardless of their validity or logic.

There is no science in social media debates. Just mud slinging, political point scoring, conjecture and conspiracy theories.

I'd think the penalty in science for being wrong should be learning. This differs from publishing a paper with unsound application of the scientific method or analysis. For that, the scientific community seems to treat those "wrong" arguments much more harshly.

“A critical culture seeks to correct rather than punish...” that’s rich in one of the most punitive legal systems in the world.

Precisely why law should be narrowly tailored to objective events with very clear lines.

Moreover, it's not a loss. If one is having a discussion with another and he/she is shown to be incorrect (with evidence), they have learned in the process. The result is a better scientist.

I find it interesting that an old thing has a new name. Cancellation has been a part of the human condition since... forever. What's arguably new is folks without enough individual power banding together to wield the power previously reserved for high status individuals.

In the old days they used to call it "accountability" now it is the terror of late-boomer/early gen-xers who are accustomed to being the loudest voice in the room, petrified at the thought of being forced into equality with the rest of us.

Interestingly this was also the way at large for law enforcement, including judges. @serial Season 3 did a great job at breaking it down. The status quo seems to be shifting now, still unclear if it would for judges and accountability however.

The emphasis on how cancel culture is increasingly aimed towards talking about someone instead of the issue at hand in addition to favoring a culture of coercion over correction was so spot on. Glad to see you read this as well @paulg !
