I agree wholeheartedly. They are promoting conformity and using social shaming and mob pressure as a way to keep others in line. Thoughtful discussions are a thing of the past.

there are communities for thoughtful discussion, e.g. the "intellectual dark web." They are not perfect, but at least they start with the premise that no topic is taboo as long as it's presented in a cogent and civilized way.

Nothing scales well. When the stakes get higher and the results get faster, the flaws of scaling things up become more readily apparent. This is true for all things.

Follow the money. Free journalism and academia require funding without constraint for their research. With the drop in federal/state funding in the US and increase in corporate funding (academia) or consolidation (media), things seemed to have changed for the worse.
