When you apply to anything — schools, jobs, apartments — having just a small experience of being on the other side dramatically improves your ability to produce a good application.
This is so true. One of the most interesting things I learned from all those years of reading applications at YC is how application processes work.

the same is true for pitching. When you've been an investor, it's much easier to know what investors are looking to buy. As a first-time founder in particular, you have a hard time understanding what they want vs. what you want.
